Assistant Superintendent Tim Callahan and Drury Students Jacinta Felix and Madison Saunders presented the district’s Portrait of a Graduate work at the county-wide Berk12 Convening on Thursday at the Berkshire Innovation Center in Pittsfield. Dr. Callahan emphasized the need to rethink how learning is prioritized within our Berkshire County Schools to meet the needs of students, employers, colleges, and the community. He called upon attendees to take action to make sure our teachers and students across the county are allowed to focus on what matters most rather than being pressured to race through hundreds of content standards for an ever-increasing slate of standardized tests. Jacinta and Madison talked about their positive experiences at Drury High School, the freedom they feel to forge their own pathways through the Early College Program, the community building they experience during CREW advisory periods, and the benefit of interventions and support they receive during Flex block each day. The county-wide Portrait of a Graduate emphasizes six core competencies that prepare students for life after high school, and our Drury student representatives exemplified those competencies in their presentation and in their leadership within the school.

The 1Berkshire Youth Leadership Program is currently accepting applications for the class of 2025. The deadline to apply is February 16th. This is a year-long program for Juniors in high school and Junior-aged homeschool students in Berkshire County. It kicks off with a 2.5 day retreat June 7-9, then monthly day-long sessions from August thru March with graduation being in April 2025. This is meant to be a program that serves and elevates those who have not necessarily had access to robust leadership development opportunities previously, not just the "top students" in a district, as they find those students grow the most through participation. They aspire to have representation from every district in the county and the program is capped at 30 participants. For more information on the program, here is the link. https://1berkshire.com/1berkshire-programs/youth-leadership-program/ Current sophomores can use the direct link to the application found here: https://form.jotform.com/233314847456158

COLORISM 101: HISTORY, HOW IT WORKS, RESISTANCE STRATEGIES ON FEBRUARY 7, 2024 AT 6 PM The NAACP, Berkshire County Branch invites the public to join the branch and our special guest Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at Williams, Dr. VaNatta S. Ford for Colorism 101. During this presentation Dr. Ford will discuss the history of colorism, how it functions, and strategies to resist colorist behaviors and practices. Colorism has been defined as the privileging of light skin tone over dark skin tone. The stigma of colorism continues to produce discord, distrust, discrimination, and cultural disconnects between Black and White individuals as well as within the Black American family and community.
